Everyone needs a daily skincare routine but, with so many products on the market, it’s hard to know where to start. Scrolling through Instagram, you often see 8-10 step routines with multiple products but if you don’t have the basics down, these can be intimidating and overwhelming. Fortunately, your skincare routine does not have to be complicated. The following 4 steps will get you started on your way to healthier skin.

Step 1 – Cleanse

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing. In the evening, use a gentle cleanser first to remove makeup, dirt, and oil, using a soft washcloth to rinse clean. Cleanse a second time to remove any remaining traces and to prime the skin for the treatment step. In the morning, a single cleanse will suffice.

Step 2 – Treat

Treatments, usually in the form of a serum, are a vital step in every routine. Serums are highly concentrated formulas that target specific skin care concerns. Continued use of treatment serums can result in smoother texture, decrease in fine lines and wrinkles, and a more even complexion. After AM or PM cleansing, pat (don’t rub!) the excess water from your skin and apply a thin, even layer. Continue to the next step to seal in the goodness!

Step 3 – Moisturize

Moisturizers provide nourishment and hydration to your skin’s natural barrier. A healthy skin barrier is made up of ceramides, cholesterols, and fatty acids. When choosing a moisturizer, look for all 3 components for optimal nourishment. Apply in the morning and evening after your treatment serum. Some people choose a lighter formulation in the daytime and a thicker, more emollient cream at night.

Step 4 – Protect

The final step in your daytime routine is sun protection. The damaging effects of the sun are well documented and can undo the results of even the best skincare routines. Physical sunscreens such as titanium oxide and zinc oxide are superior to chemical sunscreens. They provide a physical barrier, effectively blocking UVA and UVB rays, don’t clog pores, last longer in direct sunlight, and are less irritating for sensitive skin types.
